Alma Mata GH Careers Day 2009

Over 50 doctors interested in a career in global health attended our latest Careers Day in November 2009. They joined a group of like-minded colleagues and inspirational expert speakers for a day of talks, workshops and discussion at King's College Hospital's Weston Education Centre in London. Check out the Careers Day website here.

Postgraduate Training in Global Health for UK Doctors: Our Proposal

Many of our members are UK doctors in training who are passionate about Global Health.  But passion is not enough; if the UK wants to lead Global Health in the future, it needs to educate its doctors today.

Until now, doctors have taken ad hoc educational opportunities in Global Health, such as the Diploma in Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, and taken time out to work in developing countries, effectively creating their own career paths.  Since MMC, this has become much more difficult... and as such Global Health training is not necessarily of high enough quality for the doctors and the people that they serve, in developing countries and in the UK.

We believe that it is time for a proper career path for those who want to work in global health.  This would centre around a nationally-recognised Global Health training structure with a curriculum and tiered qualifications, so that people can study to a level appropriate to their career plans.  We believe that doctors in training from all specialties should be able to add Global Health qualifications to their core training.  Global Health would not be a Speciality in its own right. Over the next few months, we are taking our ideas to key players in the Government and outside.  Read our proposal and send us your comments.

Out of Programme Experience - Article in BMJ Careers

24th September 2008 We encourage our members to read Emily Spry's article on the practicalities of taking time out to work overseas in the context of the recent changes to UK postgraduate changing.

Conference & Careers Fair 2007 - Commercialisation and Health

November 24th and 25th 2007. Alma Mata's third global health conference - Commercialisation and Health - was a great success. Recordings of the main  plenaries, two of the workshop sessions and the concluding debate on postgraduate training in global health are available here in mp3 format. The conference website has now been archived.
The conference was followed on Sunday by AM's first international health careers fair and a debate on the future of postgraduate training in global health. We would like to once more thank all our speakers, contributors and delegates who helped make the weekend so productive and enjoyable. For those of you who wanted to help with the running of Alma Mata, please visit the working group page and email us!
