"OVERSEAS DOCTORS, OVERSEAS PATIENTS. WHERE DO WE STAND? WHERE
DO YOU STAND?"

The face of the NHS is changing. What are the rights and duties of
overseas doctors? What are the rights of overseas patients and what is
our duty of care? What has been your experience? What do you think?

_INTERNATIONAL PHYSICIANS FOR THE PREVENTION OF NUCLEAR WAR (IPPNW)
(NOBEL PEACE PRIZE WINNERS 1985)_

IPPNW is a global organization with tens of thousands of health
professionals and students working towards a peaceful world free of
nuclear weapons. IPPNW has many projects including campaigns against
small arms, a project with refugees in Palestine and student exchanges.

_ANTI TRIDENT NUCLEAR WEAPONS CAMPAIGN_
Until now IPPNW has seen minimal action from UK med students. However,
we recently hosted two popular workshops at the national Medsin
conference on the urgent issue of the UK's Trident Nuclear Weapons
system.

Trident consists of four submarines, and 200 missiles each
approximately 8 times the explosive power of the atomic bomb dropped
on Hiroshima. Trident will become obsolete by 2020. The decision
whether or not to replace Trident is to be made by the UK government
after a parliamentary debate. However, reports have indicated that
government investment into new nuclear technology may have already
started.

Some reasons for Trident NOT to be replaced:

* Nuclear weapons can indiscriminately kill millions of people with
long-term fall out causing cancers, leukaemia and damage to
generations to come- as experienced until now in Hiroshima.
* The use of a nuclear weapon breaks international law, furthermore
the UK's replacement breaks the non-proliferation treaty.
* How can we expect other countries to disarm or generate new weapons
while are actively building our own?
* The cost of Trident may cost up to £76bn to buy missiles, replace
nuclear submarines, and maintain the system for 30 years- money better
spent on health services, the environment, and reducing the threat of
conflict.
* Our nuclear weapons are dependent on US technology and support, and
link us to US policies.

If you would like to know more about how you can get involved in the
campaign or IPPNW please contact me. Also, join the yahoo group
IPPNW_UK and look at the links below for more info regarding Trident.
We need to start a grassroots movement similar to the one that forced
the abolition of landmines. Every person that joins is one more step
towards a world free of nuclear weapons.
