Global Health News
Sleeping sickness infects 50,000 people a year, mainly in
Sub-Saharan Africa. Prevalence is increasing yet it remains one of the
most under-researched infectious disease. MSF have published a report
aiming to focus attention on the trypanosomiases.
http://www.almamata.net/news/articles/trypanosomiasis[2]. Happily, the
limited research seems to be bearing fruit as trials into combination
therapy appear to have been successful in Uganda and Democratic
republic of
Congo. http://www.almamata.net/news/node/7001[3]
Similarly neglected is the role of chronic disease as a cause for
ill health in the developing world. Thomas Gaziano reports that
cardiovascular disease is now a leading cause of death in the
developing world. Strengthening of public health can help combat this
and all cause mortality. http://www.almamata.net/news/node/7002[4].
