E-BULLETIN No 1 - November 2007

Welcome to this the first THET e-bulletin which includes news and information relevant to Health Links and THET activities. The e-bulletin will be circulated once every month.
If you have any materials or news which you would like to publicise, send the information to susana at thet.org. Conference and workshop reviews are also welcome. Note that we are unable to distribute attachments so please ensure that your item can be pasted into an e-mail message.

FUNDING AND COMPETITIONS
· A new round for 2007 seedcorn funding grants is now open for Health Links that are starting or at a formative stage. The deadline for applications is Monday 17th December 2007. · Links Competition - Win up to £1,000 for your Health Link! Can you, with the help of your overseas partners, tell us how your Link is making an impact? If you can, submit your experience to THET by Friday 30th November 2007. For more details see http://www.thetftp.users44.donhost.co.uk/THETLinksCompetition.pdf.
· New grants to evaluate the work of Health Links. Grants of up to £5,000 are available through a new funding programme launched by THET. Applications should be submitted by 7th January 2008. For more details visit http://www.thet.org.uk/index.php?/page/index/resourcesandfunding.html.
· The 2008 Royal College of Physicians International Bursaries are now open. The bursaries are targeted to Physicians from low-income and lower-middle-income countries. Successful applicants will be able to attend an RCP conference in the UK and, subject, to availability, a 2-4 week study visit to a relevant specialist unit. · NHS Wales Health Links - £50,000 for the 2008-09 financial year is now available to support Welsh Health Links. Access the application form on http://www.wales.nhs.uk/documents/WHC(2006)070.pdf. · Nigel Griffiths MP, is Chair of the All-party Parliamentary Group "Connecting Communities". The first task of the Group is to encourage NHS Trusts and schools that are linked to invite their local MP for a briefing and urge them to join the All Party Parliamentary Group. · Tuesday 27th November - The International Child Health Group (ICHG) in association with the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health is holding its Annual Meeting 'UK - Developing Country Links in Child Health: Why, What and How?'. · Friday 17th December - The Royal College of Physicians is organizing a carol concert in support of THET. Members of the RCP and employees, including our own Sylvia Watkins, Postgraduate Development Officer, will play music by Weber, Beethoven and many more. · Travel Insurance - THET's travel insurance Broker, David Green, has prepared a brief summary of the key areas of cover that might not be included in a standard travel insurance policy and without which, Link participants are exposed. CHANGES AT THET
· David Percy, Director for Healthcare Strategy, has recently retired. David has worked for THET promoting Health Links across the UK from 2005 to 2007. David was seconded from the Department for Health in England. THET is working very hard in finding a replacement for David and we will be missing him while he is travelling all over Argentina and eating huge steaks...
· Nicola Bevan has taken over from Rachael Coker as THET's Charity Administrator. Nicola has worked previously for CAFOD, DfID and Justice Africa, and she is an excellent administrator for the organization. · Rachael Coker is no longer THET's Charity Administrator but our brand new Somaliland Assistant Programme Coordinator. She will be working with Catherine Novi, Ethiopia and Somaliland Programme Coordinator, to take programmes there to a new level... · Giovanna Stopponi is the new part-time Programme Coordinator for Uganda. Giovanna works also as an independent film producer and has experience in development work in Asia and Africa. · Kambia District Hospital, Sierra Leone is recruiting a Medical Officer. This position would be appropriate for a middle grade doctor with at least two years experience.
