INVITATION TO
DISCUSSION EVENING 2008
MSF-UK is pleased to invite you - and anyone from your organization who is interested - to another discussion evening taking place in The Crown Tavern, Clerkenwell Green, London EC1 . Nearest tube Farringdon.
Wednesday February 20th 2008, 6.30pm to 8.30pm
“GIVE ME A COW, NOT READY-TO-USE FOOD!!”
IS READY-TO-USE FOOD THE ANSWER TO MALNUTRITION?
The world produces enough food for all, but this means little to many people in the developing world. Current international estimates state that nearly 20 million children under 5 suffer from acute malnutrition and this contributes to more than 1 million deaths every year.
In this evening's discussion, we will consider what should, and what could, be done about this and by whom? In the poorest and most affected regions (Sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia), can we effectively prevent malnutrition by providing nutrient-dense ready-to-use food or should we be helping to increase food production? Can organizations like MSF treat acute malnutrition in children and at the same time effectively prevent it in resource-poor settings? And do we need more hands on deck and who should be providing the funding?
Facilitator :
Prof. Andrew Prentice: London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine
Our speakers will include :
Valerie Captier: Nutritional Advisor, MSF
Jean-Michel Grand: Executive Director of Action against Hunger
Representatives from Valid International and ODI (TBC)
